What can I expect from class?

Music Together is designed for children ages birth through kindergarten. At Music Together we believe that music ability is as much a basic life skill as walking and talking, and that all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with pleasure and confidence in the music of their culture. Music Together classes nurture the child's natural enthusiasm for music and movement as we sing, dance, chant, and play instruments in an informal setting that will enrich their musical environment and guide them towards a lifetime of music-making enjoyment. Sing, Dance, Play, and Learn! We continue to hold everyone's health and safety in our hearts as we get through this time.

As a parent or caregiver, what is my role in class?

Music Together - On Location: Enhance your child's experience in class by remembering to sing, sing, and sing. Your active participation is the key to your child/ren's learning. Since it is difficult for a young child to mask out adult conversation please wait to have adult conversations till after class, and instead contribute to the creation of a musical environment for every child/ren and grown-up to experience.

Try not to give verbal directions. It can be tough to restrain the impulse to give your child directives such as "Do what she is doing, hold your instrument this way” but children respond best by just seeing and hearing you doing (and enjoying) it yourself!  Of course watch out for your child's safety, but mostly your job is to just relax, engage with your child and have fun!

Music Together Online: Your role is exactly the same in your home as it is in our group classes. Our Mission has always included bringing music back into your homes and daily lives.  MTOnline gives you the opportunity to do just that. Music Learning Supports All Learning® because it is a multisensory experience.  Help build your child/ren's neurological connections by singing through activities throughout your day: playtime, naptime, dancing, cooking, bathtime, walking and jumping outside, the possibilities are endless.

Why aren't there separate classes for different age groups?

Music Together - On Location and 

Music Together Online: 

This approach is based on research from music education, early childhood development, and family relationships, as well as our 30 years experience in the field.  In the 1980s, Music Together pioneered the development of the mixed-age approach in early childhood music. In each class we strive to create a musically rich, developmentally appropriate environment where the whole family can enjoy music and nurture skills at the level right for each child. Mixed-age classes also provide a rich learning environment because children of different ages thrive when they interact with each other: the babies are often fascinated by the older child, and the “big” children enjoy helping and sharing with the “little” ones. Music Together classes for Babies 0-9 months of age are offered to groups of 6 or more babies and their caregivers.

How many are in a class and why are second class choices required for registrations?

Music Together - On Location: Each class has 6 - 12 registered children plus their primary caregiver(s). 

Availability in a class upon registration is based on the availability of the location, teacher and space in the class.  A minimum of 6 children registered in a class is the guideline for a class to stay on the schedule.  

Music Together Online: Zoom Classes have a maximum of 14 families. Facebook Live Classes are left up online for at least one week on our private group page. Prerecorded classes on your family portal may be viewed at any time as well.

How do siblings, twins and triplets experience class?  

Music Together - On Location:  How many little boys in green and blue shirts do you see?  

This class has girl twins and boy triplets! Families choose to bring as many caregivers that love to participate and your teacher is always willing to lend an extra lap. We offer generous sibling discounts for in person classes.

Music Together Online: Music Together has always been for the whole family.  Now, with MTOnline, everyone in your household participates for one family fee.

Can I bring my unregistered older sibling to class?

Music Together - On Location: Throughout the semester, Music Together classes may be in session when older children have a school holiday. Older siblings of registered students may occasionally visit provided the older sibling is HEALTHY and that the visit is prearranged with the school office. Visitation spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. An older sibling is welcome to attend one time per session as our guest. After that there is a $25.00 guest fee.

Music Together Online: Music Together has always been for the whole family.  Now, with MTOnline, everyone in your household participates for one family fee.

Make-ups: What if I miss a class during the semester?

Music Together - On Location: Families are allowed two makeups per semester to be used during that semester.  Make-ups are available at any location on a first come first served basis. If we have to cancel a class you will be given an extra makeup to schedule for that canceled class.  You can schedule a make-up online. Click on "For Enrolled Families" tab on home page, then click on make-ups.

Holiday Closings Calendar DO NOT require make-ups as they are built into your schedule. 

Make-ups do not carry over from previous semesters.

Music Together Online: Families enrolled in MTOnline have unlimited access to classes throughout the week.  We understand that your schedules and daily routines may be different each day.  With that in mind, we have created the most flexible access to families for the most number of classes via different technologies.

• If NYC schools are canceled, we cancel classes.
• If you have a question regarding  a weekend class or a weekday class, please check our website for any class cancellations by 8:00 am  that day.
• If your class is canceled due to extreme weather conditions, you will be given an additional make-up to be used during the current semester. When location space, semester dates, and teacher availablity allows, a class will be added on to the end of the semester. You will be informed either way.

Can I switch to a different class?

Music Together - On Location: Changes can be made depending on class availability. There is a $25.00 class switching fee if you choose to change your class after the registration deadline.

What if I need to withdraw from class?

Music Together - On Location: Families wishing to withdrawal from class must do so before the registration deadline for each semester which is 10 days before the start date of a given session. Families are responsible for class attendance. Non-attendance does not constitute a withdrawal and all tuition fees are forfeited if the school office is not informed of your withdrawal before the registration deadline. If circumstances necessitate withdrawal from class, please call the  office.

What if I start classes after the semester begins?

Music Together - On Location: We understand that families may learn about our classes after our class session begins. We provide "catch-up classes" for late registrants to attend so that you have the opportunity to get in all of your classes for that session. Note that you still have your 2  "make-up' classes for each session.

Music Together Online: We understand that families may learn about our classes after our class session begins. When a family registers for a session, they are registering for 45 minutes of weekly class time, materials, and bonus access to unlimited classes.  If you register late, you may take as many bonus classes you like.

Can we eat in class?

Music Together - On Location: Please feel comfortable to nurse your child in class, but we ask that you not bring food or drink into classrooms. This is due to cleanliness and the fact that we do not know what allergies children in the class may or may not have.

Music Together Online:  It is your home so your rules apply! That said, Eating or Drinking while Singing and Dancing is not advised. 

Is it OK for more than one adult to come to class? YES!

Music Together - On Location: Both or either parent, grandparents or caregivers are welcome to attend class at any time – no need to ask. Two grown-ups are always welcome to attend class with a child. Please let us know if you have out of town family visiting that would like to attend a specific class with you. Whole family music making in your home is extremely valuable to your child's musical development, and attending class occasionally helps the other family members to join in at home.

Music Together Online: Everyone in your family household is always encouraged to participate, even your pets, toys, and blankets.

How should we use our Music Together Materials?

Music Together Online: 

Listen to your music at home and in the car as frequently as possible, especially during the first few weeks of class and play on shuffle to hear all the songs. Make the music and /or keepsake songbook available to your child to listen to while they are eating, playing, before nap or at bedtime. 

Discover all the fun activities on your Free Music Together App, in addition to each semesters song collections. There are 12 different collections in total!

Discover your  keepsake songbook with your child!  The language of music on a page will be familiar to your child/ren and help them when they are more ready for formal music instruction, typically when they are school aged. Imagine, your child will have the confidence to look at music notation and not be intimidated. Their love of music can continue to thrive. 

Be sure to read "Music and Your Child" - A Guide for Parents and Caregivers and visit your Family Music Zone at MusicTogether.com and log in with the code inside your songbook.  You may be surprised how valuable it is, especially after having personal experience in class.

May I bring a camera to class

Music Together - On Location: Occasionally classes at Music Together are professionally photographed and/or videotaped. These photographs/videos are sometimes used for publicity purposes. By attending our classes you give us permission to use photos and videos for these purposes. We will NEVER identify you or your child by name in any photo or videos. Our classes are participatory and educational experiences between adults and children, we ask our families to please refrain from taking photo or video during class time, however we welcome pictures before or after class and love to see them.
